Abstract The issue of abuse has been given serious attention in many parts of the world and Nigeria is not left out. Given this serious effort, one would have thought that this menace will not persist. Child abuse occurs not only at home but has found its way into the school system thus constituting a barrier to the interest and subsequent attainment of sound educational development in the country. The aim of the present study was to investigate youth attitudes towards abuse and their associate variables in Jalingo.  click here
 The main focus was on their definition of abuse, most common abuse types they suffered from and what they think can help to reduce it. A sample of the youth population from Mallum (n=824), Nukkia (n=401), Sabon Gari (n=619), Bakasi (n=354) and other Neighbouring clad (n=326) participated in the study, Data was analyzed using mean standard deviation, descriptive statistics, and Chi square goodness of fit. The results showed that the definition of child abuse (in order of intensity) is sexual abuse, Physical punishment, blaming, inattention, frightening, and beating.Considering the results of this study, there must be an urgent clarification of child abuse definition specifically the role of the victim along with a well organized policy in promoting parental education in terms of effective parenting which may enhance their learning skills and general performance.KEYWORD: Attitudes, child abuse, Jalingo Youth, Educational Performance;

Abstract : Pigeon pea, an under-utilized leguminous crop often referred to as ‘complete food’ not only has the capacity of fighting hunger and malnutrition but also improves the soil conditions with minimal effect to the environment. The study assessed the  Net returns and economic efficiency of the Pigeon pea farmers in Benue State. Primary data were collected from 81 pigeon pea (cajanus cajan) farmers using structured questionnaire and oral interview.. click here
Multi-stage sampling technique was adopted. This involves purposive selection of three communities in Benue State (Odoba, Pila and Shaminja Descriptive statistics, gross margin analysis and Stochastic Frontier Model were used to analyse the data. The study found mean gross margin per hectare of pigeon pea as N18,958.83. Also, the result of the profitability test showed a positive net returns on investment (t=2.23; P ≤0.05). Furthermore, the mean technical efficiency estimates of pigeon pea farmers was  72%. Similarly, an average farmer spent about 9% above the minimum frontier cost in producing a unit output. Thus, there is a scope for increasing the technical and allocative efficiency of pigeon pea farmers through better use of resources, given the current level of technology. Policy makers should focused on Pigeon pea production among other crops for increased food production and food security.KEYWORDS: Pigeon pea, technical efficiency, allocative efficiency, gross margin.

Abstract Heterochromatin is universally distributed in the chromosome of all the eukaryotes, accounting for 10% to 60% of their genome. There are two types of heterochromatin: C- and Q-heterochromatin. C-heterochromatin is found in the genome of all higher eukaryotes, while Q-heterochromatin is only in the genome of three higher primates (Homo sapiens, Pan troglodytes and Gorilla gorilla). However, there is a fundamental difference between them: click here
quantitative variability of Q-heterochromatin exists only in human populations. Despite the fact that heterochromatin regions (HRs) has been studied since the 20s of the past century, its biological role remains unclear. An attempt is made to justify the view of possible participation of HRs in cell thermoregulation. HRs, being the densest domains in a cell, apparently conducts heat between the nucleus and cytoplasm when there is a difference in temperature between them. It turned out that there is a link between the amount of Q-heterochromatin and level of human body heat conductivity (BHC): the larger the amount of Q-heterochromatin, the higher of human BHC. The data on the influence of human BHC on its life activity in norm and pathology are presented.KEYWORDS: human body heat conductivity; cell thermoregulation; chromosomal Q-heterochromatin; human adaptation.

Abstract : The presented work presents the results of a study of the mechanical strength of composites of low density polyethylene with fish bone and bentonite fillers, depending on the volume content and type of fillers and relative to deformation. It was revealed that at relatively low values of mechanical deformation for biocomposites and composites with bentonite fillers, mechanical strength increases, reaching maximums, remains almost constant. click here
The decrease in mechanical strength with fillers of fish bone and bentonite occurs with an increase in the volume content of fillers. The results show that with a variation of the composition and type of filler, samples with high mechanical strength can be obtained.KEYWORDS: Bentonite, fishbone,LDPE+x vol%Bentonite, LDPE+x vol%Fishbone, mechanical strength, mechanical tension.

Abstract : Behavioral support programs using telephone counseling models have been recognized as an effective tool for smoking cessation, and a proper assessment of the program is important to provide robust support to quit smoking. This study examines if other factors may influence quitting rates in adult smokers who had telephone counseling. We conducted a retrospective cohort study comparing quitting rates from September 2016 to January 2017 with the referral from various sources (Medicine, Pre-Surgery or Post-Surgery visits, Hospital or ED discharges, and everywhere else), each counselor, use of an assisting medication and the BMI with adjustment for other covariates. click here
Logistic regression analysis of 268 smokers compared differences in the quitting rates achieved by the four counselors. The adjusted ORs for the counselors were 0.89 (95% CI 0.46-1.73), 0.70 (95% CI 0.19-2.57), and 0.71 (CI 0.35-1.44) when comparing to one counselor. The OR for referral type was 1.81 (95% CI 0.59- 5.50) comparing Surgery to Medical referral and 0.93 (95% CI 0.41- 2.13) comparing referral from Hospital discharge to medical type. Pharmacotherapy (OR 1.68, 95% CI 0.92-3.08) and BMI (OR 0.79, 95% CI 0.60-1.02) showed no significant association with quitting rates. In conclusion, telephone counseling demonstrated consistent quitting rates in the different referral types and counselors, and the efficacy of counseling may be not related to any other factors such as medications or personal BMI.KEYWORDS: telephone counseling; smoking cessation; quitting rates.

Abstract :Background: Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) or passive smoke exposure is one of the most common preventable health hazards in the community. The risk of disease and death as a result of smoking is not limited to smokers; non-smokers are also at risk from exposure to SHS. Passive smoking has recently been implicated in the development of several systemic diseases.Aims of the study: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of passive smoking on periodontal health status and on the salivary levels of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and creatine kinase (CK). click here
Materials and methods: The study comprised of 25 non-smokers and 22 passive   smokers. Unstimulated saliva sample was collected from each subject for biochemical analysis of salivary enzymes. Periodontal parameters including: plaque index, gingival index, bleeding on probing, probing pocket depth and clinical attachment level were recorded. Results: statistical analysis revealed that ALP in saliva was higher in smoker than       the non smoker group and there was significant difference in the salivary LDH and CK levels between smokers and non-smokers groups. Probing pocket depth (PPD) and clinical attachment level (CAL) score 1 was higher in passive smokers compared with non smokers, while there was decrease in the number of bleeding sites. Conclusions: Passive smoking has negative impact on periodontal health and can consider as risk factor for periodontal disease although further studies are needed. Salivary enzymes (ALP, LDH and CK) are considered as good biochemical markers of periodontal tissue destruction and can be used to evaluate the effect of passive smoking on periodontal health status.KEYWORDSnon smokers, passive smokers, salivaperiodontal health status.ry enzymes,

Abstract : The objective of this study was to compare which of the five popular algorithms for the classification of data mining (i.e., Classifier K-NN, Decision Tree, Bayesian Web, Efficient Bayesian Multivariate Classifier, and Forest by Penalizing Attributes) comes closest to reality in terms of being able to classify and predict excess body weight in children and adolescents. Towards the objective of analyzing the data, a database of 5,962 primary and secondary school students was utilized. The subjects, whose ages range from six to seventeen years, are from the region of Itaupú-Paraná, Brazil. The program used for the data mining was WEKA (Waikato Environment for Knowledge Analysis).   click here
The data mining was applied following the methodology of Oracle Technology Network (OTN), and the data were analyzed in three groups: boys, girls, and both sexes together. The results indicate that the technique J-48 proved to be the most realistic classifier and can thus contribute to predicting the risk of excess body weight in children and adolescents in the region of Lago de Itaipú, Brazil. The results suggest the use of technique J-48 in order to identify excess body weight in children and adolescents on a grand scale. This technique can be used in clinical and epidemiological contexts with samples of Brazilian youth.KEYWORDS : Data mining, classification, prediction, decision tree, overweight, obesity.

AbstractThe vibro-seismic monitoring of the Earth’s is a sufficiently efficient tool for studying the corresponding background layers for the geotechnical engineering. The base of such studies is the instants of waves arrival times which are picked out from the records of vibro-seismic waves. However, the corresponding records represent the interference of different waves including the noise ones which are added in the course of the seismic waves propagation. Therefore, the task is estimating these instants in such complicated conditions. click here

Abstract: Background & Objective: Cardiac autonomic dysfunction is commonly observed in stroke patients. However little is known about the status of autonomic functions in patients with transient ischemic attack (TIA).  The study aimed to assess cardiac autonomic functions in TIA patients and controls by cardiovascular reflex tests and analysis of short term heart rate variability (HRV). click here
Methods: 26 TIA patients and 27 age and sex matched controls were included. Autonomic reactivity was assessed by using tests of autonomic cardiovascular reflexes such as deep breathing test (DBT) and lying to standing test (LST). Measurement of HRV included both time and frequency domain parameters. In the time domain we estimated standard deviation of normal R-R intervals (SDNN) and square root of the mean squared differences of successive R-R intervals (RMSSD). Frequency domain analysis included estimation of total power (TP), high frequency (HF) power, low frequency (LF) power and LF to HF ratio. Results: Compared with controls, HRV components including SDNN, RMSSD, TP, HF power were reduced and LF power, LF to HF ratio significantly increased in patients with TIA. A significant decrease of parasympathetic reactivity was also observed in TIA patients compared to controls. Conclusion: TIA patients have autonomic imbalance suggestive of attenuated parasympathetic influence and heightened sympathetic response. Autonomic dysregulation may predispose TIA patients to an increased risk of recurrent TIA and future stroke.KEYWORDSTransient ischemic attack, stroke, autonomic functions, heart rate variability, cardiovascular reflex tests

Abstract : Background: Each year, vaccination prevents an estimated 2-3 million deaths from diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough) and measles. However, In Ethiopia the percentage of children fully immunized by age 12 months has increased only slightly, from 20 percent to 22 percent in 2011.Therefore this research aimed to assess reason for incomplete vaccination and associated factors among children aged 12-23 Months in Serbo Town, Jimma zone,Oromia region, South west of Ethiopia in June, 2017GC. click here
Methodology: Community based cross-sectional study design was conducted to on 267 mothers/care takers of children aged 12-23 months from the sampled house hold in Serbo town. Systematic sampling technique was used to select study participants within the kebeles .A structured questionnaires was prepared and data was collected by face to face interview and the analyzed by SPSS version 20 was used. To identify the factors of incomplete immunization chi square test p<0.05 was calculated. Based on the finding the result was presented by tables and figures.Result: Out of a total of 260 children included in the study 45.5 % (126), were incompletely vaccinated and 48.8% (119) were fully immunized whereas 5.7 %( 14) did not take any vaccination. Pentavalent1- pentavalent3 dropout was 23%.  The most common reason of incomplete vaccination were 28.4% (40) due to lack of awareness of information for subsequent vaccination left followed by 16.3%(23)lack of awareness on importance of vaccination and 14.2%(20) lack of vaccine supply. The study also showed that educational status (p=0.00082), marital status (P=0.0008) and monthly income (P=0.0017) of the immediate caretaker were significant association with incomplete immunization of p-value < 0.05.Conclusion & Recommendation: There was low vaccine coverages with 45.5% incompletely vaccinated children aged 12-23 months in Serbo town. Lack of information and lack vaccine supplies were found to be associated with incomplete vaccinations. Therefore the emphasis should be given to the community awareness creation and provision of an adequate vaccine supplies to the communities by the stakeholders.   KEYWORDS : Ethiopia factors, incomplete vaccination, reason.

However, its phytonutients are yet to be evaluated. This study is to investigate phytochemical profile and proximate nutrient compositions of Laguncularia racemosa leaves. From the analysis, the phytochemical profile revealed the followings; Alkaloid 6.01 %, Saponin20.23%, Tannin 65.21%. Flavonoid 7.45% and phytate recorded 1.10%. These values are moderate when compared with other plants analyzed in Nigeria indicating that the plant can serves as alternative to antibiotics (Drugs) in livestock industries due to its pharmacological properties particularly now that pathogens are building more resistance to drugs. Data obtained for proximate composition shows crude fibre recording 30.87%, carbohydrates 23.001% and protein 9.725%. This finding indicates that the analyzed leaves can be implored as alternative feed ingredient in animals especially ruminants and non-ruminants.KEYWORDSLaguncularia Racemosa Leaves, Phyto-chemicals, proximate composition.
